While certain people have similar behavior patterns or traits, the causes leading to observable or reportable traits are as individual as their fingerprints. Even two people raised by the same parents, in the same household, given the same advantages, or lack thereof, will not exhibit the same characteristics entirely because, as we know, everyone is an individual and we are all unique. Every person perceives things differently. At an early age I learned that I wanted to avoid conflict in my life at all costs. This desire of mine to escape conflict did not mean there wasn’t any conflict, in fact, there were many. Many people prefer to avoid conflict for a variety of reasons. My reasons stem from the fact that my mother created conflict between all the members of our family. I would go to the library in the summer and check out piles of books to read, thereby escaping to other worlds that helped me gain access to avoidance of conflict through silence.

There may be a million other causes that will lead people to conflict avoidance, but none of them will have the exact same history that led them to that trait. It is easy to generalize causes and lump groups of people together, but individual experiences are truly that, unique to the person.

When reading this prompt, I immediately gravitated toward my lack of athletic ability. Most of my life I have wanted to be good at a specific sport, but to this day I haven’t found one that I was anything more than mediocre at. In fact, I played softball one season because my sister did and I thought maybe it might be my thing; I hated it, and broke my wrist mid-season which I was elated over because that meant I could quit. ; ) I have always wondered why some are gifted at sports and others (like me) just aren’t. Is my athleticism lacking because my weak ankles aren’t cut out for running and I’m not the most coordinated? Is it because I just don’t really have enough of an interest in the sport, or am I just not dedicated enough? I’m not a super competitive person and standing in the outfield worrying about whether I would catch that fly ball would send me stomach into knots. Maybe sports just aren’t my thing. But why?

There are so many possible answers (rival causes) to why I’ve never been successful at sports. It would be very hard to narrow down one specific explanation for my lack of talent in the athletics department. As our textbook states, I could easily provide cause to my inadequacies in sports, but it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to provide the cause.
